In a White House briefing on March 17, 2020, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced and the IRS followed by releasing Notice 2020-17 that taxpayers and small businesses that have an April 15 tax filing deadline will get a three-month extension to pay any income taxes that are owed. This means that they will have until July 15, 2020 to pay any taxes that are owed without any penalties or interest charges. All individual U.S. taxpayers qualify for this extension and do not have to file any special paperwork or extension requests, as the deadline will be automatically extended. The filing deadline remains April 15, 2020 so the deadline for making IRA contributions for tax year 2019 remains April 15, 2020.
