On October 20, 2017, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) announced its final decision to add a preferred language question to the redesigned Uniform Residential Loan Application (URLA). The question allows a borrower to identify a language other than English in which he/she wishes to communicate. It also provides clear disclosures to explain that the mortgage transaction is likely to be conducted in English and that language resources may not be available. The updated model URLA is expected to be published prior to the end of 2017. Lenders may begin using the redesigned URLA in July 2019, but use of the redesigned form will not be mandatory for Enterprise loans until February 2020.
